Lorenzo's actions speak as loudly as his words. Last year, after rapper Nipsey Hussle was shot outside his store in Los Angeles, the brand produced a T-shirt with 100% of proceeds going to Hussle's children's trust fund; after the killing of George Floyd just last month, Fear of God launched a collaborative T-shirt with the help of eight other brands to do the same for Floyd's daughter. In order to continue supporting these important causes, Lorenzo is keen to emphasize the importance of longevity, as opposed to the more fleeting, faddish attitude of streetwear labels looking to make a quick buck. "In my opinion, Essentials is actually an exercise in sustainability," Lorenzo explains. "It's about creating the best basics—the best hoodie, the best sweatpants, and with the best shape, proportion, and weight."
Where luxury's inherent exclusivity relies on its high price points, strictly guest-listed fashion shows, and a narrow definition of beauty communicated via advertising, the exclusivity of streetwear operates along different lines. Whether it's a scarcity of product that leads to eye-watering prices on resale sites or the unpredictability of in-store and online drops, the customer base may be more diverse, but the lack of accessibility is still there. After plenty of reflection, it's a mentality Lorenzo now sees as dated. "To me, what I was doing with Essentials felt dishonest after a while, because it was just a watered-down version of Fear of God," he adds. "I wanted to provide something that can stand alongside the main line as its own being."
Whether you call them balaclavas or knitted hoods, they're back! Hadn't you heard. As I didn't want to go full stealth mode, I needed one that fit my lady-like sensibilities. Enter the Cecilie Bahnsen's grey wool balaclava with ruffle details which I picked up in anticipation of a ski trip I have planned. I cannot wait to sport it on the slopes—it's all very Audrey in the opening scene of Charade. readers quickly fell in love with Rag & Bone's Miramar wide-leg jeans—thanks in part to Paulina Porizkova. Yes, they look like a classic pair of flared denim trousers, but they feel more like your favorite pair of sweats, thanks to an ultra-soft jersey fabric.
